How to Fly
Before you can fly:
Check in at the front gate to get your pilot pass, then you can fly at one of the 4 flight lines (2 open at a time, one Race and one Freestyle)
DO NOT PLUG IN UNLESS YOU ARE AT A FLIGHT LINE AND THE FLIGHT LINE MANAGER HAS CALLED YOUR TURN (No, not for a quick test, and no, you cant go over there, away from everybody else..you'll blast another pilot out of the sky, please dont)
Flight Lines
Sloss Drone Derby has four flight lines, with Racing and Freestyle in the Day and Whoops at Night.
Racing - Odd Channels - Race 1 3 5 and 7
Freestyle - Even Channels - Race 2 4 6 and 8
Whoop FreeStyle (when the Watertower Flightline is shutdown) - Even Channels - Race 2 4 6 and 8
Whoop Racing (when the Race Field is shutdown) - Odd channels - Race 1 3 5 and 7
A Flight Line Manager is stationed at each flight line to help pilots maximize their time in the air and keep the whole operation running smoothly. If you need help, talk to a Flight Line Manager or other event staff.
Drone requirements
- All Pilots must be able to change their video channel and complete a failsafe check. Full power transmission allowed.
- All digital protocols must use 25Mbps or 10 MHz bandwidth modes, and must be using the FCC channel set (i.e. no CE mode).(If you're on DJI with only 1 or 3 channels available, please ask a flight line manager for help getting FCC Mod, or getting to 10MHz mode)
- Power Levels are not limited (but bandwidth is, see Rule 2)
- All analog craft must have Smart Audio/Tramp Setup before the event. Here is a Joshua Bardwell video to show you how to setup Smart Audio.
- Pilots must check in with the Flight Line Manager before plugging in. The Flight Line Manager will give you a channel assignment
- If your drone isnt compliant with the above rules, or you're not sure, please go to the Workbenches to get help sorting your drone first.
Channel Assignments
Sloss Drone Derby uses Race band and the equivalent DJI and Walksnail channels. Flight lines use alternating frequencies to minimize interference.
Racing - ODD Channels: Race 1, Race 3, Race 5, Race 7
Freestyle - EVEN Channels: Race 2, Race 4, Race 6*, Race 8
Whoop Race - ODD Channels: Race 1, Race 3, Race 5, Race 7
Whoop Freestyle - EVEN Channels: Race 2, Race 4, Race 6*, Race 8
*Note: Race 6 is the same as the DJI and Walksnail public channel. Do not use Race 6 channel unless there are no DJI or Walksnail pilots on the line.
DJI & Walksnail Channel Equivalents
DJI and Walksnail modify the Race band channel numbering scheme. Here is the equivalent chart:

When can I fly?
Check in at the front gate and get your pilot pass.
When you're ready to fly, please check in with a Flight Line Manager before you plug in to get your channel assignment. There's a board where you can claim your channel, and we'll be flying up to 4 pilots in the air at a time. The Flight line manager will be happy to explain the system if you have any questions.
We will be closing and opening flight lines around the events of the day, so be sure you check in with the Flight Line Manager before you plug in. There is plenty of time for free flight!
